Memorial service vs. funeral: what changes in the program

A funeral is usually held within days, often with the casket present and a burial after. A memorial service can be held later and anywhere, often after a cremation or a private burial. For the program, three things change:

  • The cover line: “In remembrance of” or “A celebration of life for” instead of “Funeral service for”. You can type your own words.
  • The back page: often no pallbearers or interment; instead a reception, a gathering place, or a note about where the ashes will rest.
  • The order of service: freer, with tributes, readings and music chosen by the family.

Questions

Can I use a memorial program without a church service?

Yes. Pick “Celebration of life” or “Non-denominational” as the tradition and change the order to suit a home, a hall or a graveside.

What do I write on the cover?

Usually “In remembrance of” or “A celebration of life for”, then the full name and the dates of birth and death. You can type any line you like.

Can I add a poem instead of scripture?

Yes. The memorial and prayer cards can carry a poem such as “Crossing the Bar” or “Remember”, and the order of service can list any reading you type.
